Review of Kh. N. Momdzhian Paul Lafargue and the Philosophy of Marxism[REVIEW]E. P. Kandel' - 1980 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 19 (1):91-97.
The number of writings devoted to the philosophical and sociopolitical views of Paul Lafargue is not small. However, his literary heritage has not been published in full to this day. Nor is there a complete biography shedding light systematically on Lafargue's activity as one of the leaders of the socialist workers' movement in France, as a journalist, philosopher, and scientist. In this connection the book by Kh. N. Momdzhian is indubitably of interest. It is the most comprehensive work on Lafargue (...)

Public Deliberation about Gene Editing in the Wild.Michael K. Gusmano, Gregory E. Kaebnick, Karen J. Maschke, Carolyn P. Neuhaus & Ben Curran Wills - 2021 - Hastings Center Report 51 (S2):2-10.
The release of genetically engineered organisms into the shared environment raises scientific, ethical, and societal issues. Using some form of democratic deliberation to provide the public with a voice on the policies that govern these technologies is important, but there has not been enough attention to how we should connect public deliberation to the existing regulatory process. Drawing on lessons from previous public deliberative efforts by U.S. federal agencies, we identify several practical issues that will need to be addressed if (...)

    Early-emerging cognitive vulnerability to depression and the serotonin transporter promoter region polymorphism.E. P. Hayden, L. R. Dougherty, B. Maloney, T. M. Olino, H. Sheikh, C. E. Durbin, J. I. Nurnberger Jr, D. K. Lahiri & D. N. Klein - 2008 - J Affect Disord 107:227-30.
BACKGROUND: Serotonin transporter promoter genotype appears to increase risk for depression in the context of stressful life events. However, the effects of this genotype on measures of stress sensitivity are poorly understood. Therefore, this study examined whether 5-HTTLPR genotype was associated with negative information processing biases in early childhood. METHOD: Thirty-nine unselected seven-year-old children completed a negative mood induction procedure and a Self-Referent Encoding Task designed to measure positive and negative schematic processing. Children were also genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR gene. (...)

The process of the formation of new scientific concepts conditioned by scientific and technological progress often has the consequence that many concepts formed in special sciences - such as mathematics, physics, and biology - are immediately introduced by certain authors into the sphere of philosophy.

    Freedom and Causality.E. P. Papanoutsos - 1959 - Philosophy 34 (130):193 - 203.
The strongest argument which convinced adherents of determinism put forward is that the admission of freedom of the will does away with the principle of causality within the sphere of personal existence, and makes human activity incomprehensible. “I understand” and “I explain” mean: I apprehend the presentations of experience in terms of the basic forms of thought, and in this way I assimilate them, I register them in the system of knowledge which makes up my intellectual capital. One of these (...)

    Temperamental fearfulness in childhood and the serotonin transporter promoter region polymorphism: a multimethod association study.E. P. Hayden, L. R. Dougherty, B. Maloney, C. Emily Durbin, T. M. Olino, J. I. Nurnberger Jr, D. K. Lahiri & D. N. Klein - 2007 - Psychiatr Genet 17:135-42.
OBJECTIVES: Early-emerging, temperamental differences in fear-related traits may be a heritable vulnerability factor for anxiety disorders. Previous research indicates that the serotonin transporter promoter region polymorphism is a candidate gene for such traits. METHODS: Associations between 5-HTTLPR genotype and indices of fearful child temperament, derived from maternal report and standardized laboratory observations, were examined in a community sample of 95 preschool-aged children. RESULTS: Children with one or more long alleles of the 5-HTTLPR gene were rated as significantly more nervous during (...)

Is there a role for ethics in addressing healthcare incivility?Liz Blackler, Amy E. Scharf, Martin Chin & Louis P. Voigt - 2022 - Nursing Ethics 29 (6):1466-1475.
In a healthcare setting, a multitude of ethical and moral challenges are often present when patients and families direct uncivil behavior toward clinicians and staff. These negative interactions may elicit strong social and emotional reactions among staff, other patients, and visitors; and they may impede the normal functioning of an institution. Ethics Committees and Clinical Ethics Consultation Services (CECSs) can meaningfully contribute to organizational efforts to effectively manage incivility through two distinct, yet inter-related channels. First, given their responsibility to promote (...)

Do teachers care about truth?: epistemological issues for education.E. P. Brandon - 1987 - Boston: Allen & Unwin.
This book, first published in 1987, examines the notion of truth and then discusses knowledge and the way in which much of our knowledge revises or rejects the common-sense we start from. The author argues that our knowledge is not as secure as some would like to think and that there are important limits to the possibility for explanation. He shows how values permeate our ordinary thinking and argues against the objectivity of these values, showing the practical consequences of this (...)
